Sister Mary Bernardine Hill MSC, who was an educator at Holy Family School in Port Allen, died Sept. 8 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas.

A native of Plaquemine, Sister Bernardine entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in August 1941 and professed her final vows Aug. 11, 1946. She earned her master’s degree in Education from Notre Dame University in 1956. She earned her doctorate in education from LSU in 1964 and served as education supervisor for the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Along with Holy Family, Sister Bernardine also served in schools in New Orleans, Morgan City, Ville Platte and Franklin. She served as education supervisor for the Archdiocese of New Orleans and was a professor at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, also in New Orleans.

Sister Mary Bernardine was preceded in death by her father, Louis Hill, her mother, Lillian Roth Hill of Plaquemine and her sister, Bernice Hill Marix and husband Joseph “Jook” Marix. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Bernardine and David Legendre and daughters Lisa, Lauren and Layne; Jookie and Charlene Marix and daughters Jamie and Allison; and Louis Marix and children Michelle, Julie, Jed and Johnathan and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.

Her last years of ministry were spent at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home where she remained active in the daily life and pastoral services of the nursing home.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Sept. 12 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home and burial was at St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas.
