Sister Cecile Poitras SSJ, 84, (formerly Sister Francis Regis) died in Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke, Massachusetts on Sept 28.

A native of Fall River, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Joseph and Marie Luise (Paradis) Poitras. Sister Cecile entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of LePuy at Fall River from St. Anne Parish, Fall River in 1947.  She graduated from Novitiate High School in Fall River and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Annhurst College, Woodstock, Connecticut. She became a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Springfield, Massachusetts when the two communities merged in 1974.

Sister Cecile served as teacher at St. Roch’s, St. Jean Baptiste, and St. Matthew schools, all in Fall River; St. Joseph School and St. Mary’s Home, both in New Bedford, Massachusetts; St. Michael School, Ocean Grove, Massachusetts, and St. Joseph School, Vinton. She spent many years in Louisiana working with students with behavioral disorders becoming a pastoral assistant at St. Patrick Church in Ferriday.  

Sister Cecile was pastoral assistant at St. Clement Church in Plaquemine and later ministered in senior services at St. John the Evangelist Church in Plaquemine, where she worked until several months before her death.

Sister Cecile is survived by two sisters, Lillian Marie Poitras of Fall River and Antoinette Marie Aubin of Westport, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial was held in the Mont Marie Chapel and burial was at Mont Marie Cemetery, Holyoke, Massachusetts.
