Deacon Henry John Zeringue Sr., a longtime resident of St. James Civil Parish, passed away Nov. 10 at the age of 89.

Deacon Zeringue was born in Modeste, but his father worked in various shipyards throughout the south, eventually settling in St. James. His father established a farm equipment repair and manufacturing shop where Deacon Zeringue eventually worked after serving as a radioman in the Navy during World War II.

He married Kathleen Schexnayder in 1948 and they raised six children. Deacon Zeringue was ordained in 1980 and served his entire deaconate at St. James Church.

He served Mass with Pope John Paul I and St. John Paul II while traveling in Rome. In addition to his numerous domestic travels, Deacon Zeringue also traveled to the Holy Land and Medjugorje.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jean Remi and his mother Lillia Josephine; his wife Kathleen; his brother, Percy; his sister Annabelle Schexnayder and his sister Elise Henderson. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Hymel of New Roads; his brother, Roy Zeringue of Vacherie; his sons, Henry Jr. of Prospect, Oregon; David and Brenda Zeringue of Central; Andrew and Angela Zeringue of Vacherie; Jean and Sarah Zeringue of Geismar; his daughters, Liz and John Larkin of Baton Rouge; and Mary Rose and William Wrigley Jr. of Algiers; his 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
