The quickness with which some patients are up and walking so soon after their surgical procedures never ceases to amaze. A perfect way to avoid troubling complications, movement proves essential in a patient’s recovery. It also serves as a simple corrective to the less active lifestyle so common in our age. The popularity of step counting devices like the Fitbit and similar smartphone apps suggest we recognize the need to be more intentional in even the most conventional of our daily activities.

A walk down a hospital hallway begins with the purposeful, forward motion of a modest step. In our spiritual lives, one whispered prayer and a single moment of willing service honor Christ, bless others, and help our Catholic faith to mature, too. Because our loving and gracious God is the source of all good, the potential of the humblest effort is sure. “I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Mt 17:20b). You join many fellow parishioners to promote local ministry effectiveness, and when you contribute to a diocesan effort like the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you bless others throughout our community. We need your help, and others are counting on you. Please take this opportunity to offer your support.

“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed … nothing will be impossible for you.”

During the flood of 2016, thousands of our neighbors suffered devastating storm damage, and their stories touch us all. Everyone with whom I speak either experienced personal loss, welcomed victims of storm damage into their own homes or gave of their time and resources to encourage and minister to those directly affected. Perhaps you are one of many still struggling. If so, we pray this season is a time of refreshment and recovery, and I am grateful for another chance to wish you well.

Moved by Faith, you may also be among those who acknowledge ongoing concerns that summon our attention, and prompt us to ask for your continued support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. For you, it may even be an ideal time to consider membership in the Crosier Society or the Bishop Ott Society. Your commitment is needed. Please take that step and offer your gift of support.

P.S.  Your support will affirm the power of God and your contributions will touch individuals and families in our area with the love of Christ. If you have already replied, please accept my thanks for your generous involvement in this essential work of faith.
