The Catholic Commentator

The Catholic Commentator earned Newspaper of the Year in its respective division in the Louisiana Press Association Better Newspaper Competition for 2020.

The designation for the Newspaper of the Year is based on the number of points earned in the Better Newspaper Competition for 2020, with awards being given in individual contests for first, second, and third places. The editorial contests ranged from news story writing to graphic design while the advertising entries were judged based on design, creativity and effectiveness.

The Catholic Commentator also finished second in General Excellence.

Overall, staff members won 12 awards, including four first place awards.

Editor Richard Meek won a first place award for Best Headline. He also won second and third place awards for Best News Story, second in Best Single Editorial and third for Best News photo.

Reporter Debbie Shelley was awarded first place in Best News Photo.

Advertising director Wanda Koch won first and second place awards for Best Online Ad.

Reporter Bonny Van won first place in Best Feature Photo.

The paper also earned awards for Best Special Section and for the annual Diocesan Directory.

I am extremely proud of my staff,” Meek said. “A religious publication winning such an award in a secular competition is not easy but all of the credit goes to the group of talented and dedicated people I am blessed to work with.

“I thank each and every one of them for their commitment to excellence.”
